Healthy eating and ‘green fuel’ for your body has risen massively all around the world in the last couple of years. With so many cafes, take-outs and restaurants having a primary focus being on eating clean there is certainly a place in the market for Filmore and Union. To think that this growing company was created around a kitchen table and a quick trip to the land of healthy eating, San Francisco it really has created a great name for itself. Filmore and Union have a very clear and simple moto “[being] passionate about creating wholesome and vibrant dishes using seasonal, locally sourced and nutrient dense foods that delight the taste buds just as much as they make you feel good“.
The first restaurant to open up in the Newcastle area was in Jesmond on Acorn Road. Since then Fimore and Union have taken over the gorgeous space that over looks Intu Eldon Square in John Lewis. Working so close to the Jesmond location it is often too hard to resist a treat or a pick-me-up smoothie. Last week it all got a bit much and I ended going three times in one week. On the first visit I just called in to catch up with a friend before a meeting. It was around 5.30 and the manager welcomed us both in. Not wanting much, we ordered two of the juices from their delicious sounding drinks board. I went for the Union Tonic. A scrummy blend of pineapple, lemon, apple, strawberry and orange all just for £4.00. The Union Tonic is my favourite drink that Filmore and Union create closely followed by the Zen juice. This one has a bit more of a bite to it with some fresh vegetables thrown in such as broccoli, spinach and cucumber alongside the sweetness of apple, pineapple and ginger. Perfect for a wake-up drink of a revive after a night on the toon.
During another visit to Filmore and Union (in the same week) I went alone before I started work as I thought a hearty and healthy lunch would be perfect to get me through the day. From goodness bowls to multi-seed bagels Filmore and Union serve up a great range on their lunch time menu. Wraps and kitchen salads will fill you up and never leave you wanting more. I have previously tried the Hot Jacks bagel which includes Cajun & smoked paprika roasted chicken with red peppers & homemade guacamole. This time I decided to create my own meal. Between Peanut butter chicken schnitzel, Salmon fillet coated with flax & sunflower, Smashed avocado on rye bread with feta & roasted pears, and others I went for the chicken priced at £10. As part of the build your own dish a choice of two kitchen salads can be chosen to match your taste buds. Will it be the Slaw, Greens or Veg? A hard choice but with some recommendation from Jesmond’s manager I picked the veg and slaw.
Slaw – Sweet & spicy celeriac with a cashew, date & turmeric dressing.
Veg – Curried roasted cauliflower, sweet potato & red quinoa with a coriander & sesame dressing.
So refreshing and amazing flavours. I loved that my favourite part was the slaw which the manager had recommend to me as I thought I would like that the least. The staff at Filmore and Union has such great intel on their food it is clear that they all have a passion for food as well as the story which they are presenting so well.
Filmore and Union always has a great vibe and a real personality to every restaurant I have had the pleasure of visiting. The staff at my local health spot are so friendly and always so happy to recommend what dishes would be perfect for you. The healthy lifestyle driven brand also hosts events in many of their stores across the country. The next event coming to Filmore and Union is in the theme of the West Coast. In Jesmond, Weatherby, Ilkley, Skipton, Harrogate, Beverley and York Pertegate the San-Fran supper is taking over Filmore and Union on July 27th and 28th. If you are anywhere near these restaurant hotspots then I highly recommend you book a place and with the price of £21.95pp for a three course meal you cannot go wrong.
